Manufacturing & Technology

Using state-of-the-art technology and precision craftsmanship, our weaving mill produces textile solutions that are durable and reliable.

Engineering meets passion

When people think of a traditional weaving mill, they often hear the rhythmic clatter of old looms in their ears and picture a scene from days gone by. Here in Konradsreuth, this rhythm still sets the pace, but today it drives one of the most modern and efficient production facilities in Europe. We unite two worlds that are inextricably linked: world-class high-tech production and  artisanal care otherwise found only in the arts and crafts.

For you as a business partner – whether a furniture manufacturer, textile publisher or contract furnisher – this approach is crucial. Because in a global textile industry often characterised by mass-produced goods, interchangeability and rapid cycles, we still offer you something special. Fabrics with character. Superior quality you can rely on implicitly. And manufacturing flexibility that secures you genuine competitive advantages.

We invite you to take a closer look at our processes. We’re opening the doors to our workshops so you can discover how a simple thread is transformed into a textile masterpiece.

High-tech & Craftsmanship

In our production halls, over 70 state-of-the-art weaving machines form the technological backbone. However, standard technology often fails to meet our requirements. We modify the majority of our equipment in-house to tailor it precisely to our exceptionally broad range of yarns. Standard ‘off-the-shelf’ looms are rarely designed to process the variety we require – from extremely fine twisted yarns to super-coarse effect yarns – with process reliability.

This technical complexity requires in-depth expertise. Here, we benefit from the vast experience of our workforce. Many of our weaving masters have been with the company for over 30 years. Their deep understanding of the complex interplay between modified machine technology and demanding materials ensures that we can continually redefine technical boundaries.

Design variety

Our technological capabilities allow us to operate with great versatility and meet virtually any customer requirement. We utilise both dobby and Jacquard techniques in parallel to meet a wide range of aesthetic and functional requirements.

  • Dobby weaving: This technique is ideal for fine, geometric structures, faux-unis and elegant surfaces. It often forms the understated yet technically sophisticated foundation of a collection that captivates with its subtle details.
  • Jacquard weaving: This is the pinnacle of patternmaking. On our Jacquard machines, every single warp thread is controlled separately. This enables us to create complex, pictorial patterns and large-scale designs. From opulent, floral-inspired designs that span the entire width of the sofa to complex graphic eye-catchers, there are no limits to your creativity here.

We never settle for the standard settings of a machine. Our own team of three metalworkers specifically modifies and adapts our looms to extend our technical capabilities far beyond the norm.

At the same time, our designers are constantly pushing these new boundaries. They develop innovative weaves and combine them with novel materials to create entirely new fabrics. This results in three-dimensional effects, exciting high-low textures and a tactile depth that make our fabrics a truly distinctive experience.

From fibre to thread

The quality of a fabric is determined right from the yarn stage. That is why we do not simply purchase raw materials; instead, we view yarn procurement as an intensive development process. Working closely with our long-standing partners in spinning and twisting mills, we spend months defining the exact ‘look and feel’ of a new yarn.

Over several development rounds, we weave samples to ensure the right appearance and workability, and adjust the yarn properties until they meet our high standards. At the same time, every yarn undergoes a rigorous testing programme: we test each individual colour separately for lightfastness, tear resistance and abrasion resistance.

Even during ongoing production, we leave nothing to chance. Every incoming yarn delivery is sampled, tested and documented to guarantee consistent quality. To ensure absolute colour uniformity in the finished upholstery fabric, we weave only yarns from the same batch into a single fabric.

Our smart blend of materials

Our production covers the entire spectrum of textile possibilities, and we make targeted use of the strengths of each type of fibre.

For lovers of authenticity and for elegant home collections, we work with cotton, viscose and wool. These materials breathe, regulate moisture and bring a touch of nature into the home. With viscose blends, we ensure a particularly soft feel.

For demanding applications, such as in high-traffic commercial settings, the hospitality industry or for hard-wearing family furniture, we rely on high-performance materials. Our branded fibres are often fine polyester or polyacrylic blends. They are extremely robust, lightfast and easy to clean, yet often feel like pure natural products. The art here lies in the finishing and twisting processes, which avoid that ‘plastic feel’ and create softness instead. A key advantage here is that our synthetic fabrics are washable and easy to care for – without the need for any chemical finishes. We achieve these properties purely through the physical properties of the fibre and our weaving technique, which guarantees you reliability and durability.

Our approach to yarn dyeing

A key quality feature of our fabrics is the dyeing method. Unlike many of our competitors, who dye finished fabrics in the piece (piece dyeing) or print them, we primarily use yarns that arrive at our premises already dyed (yarn dyeing).

Why is that important?

When yarn is dyed, the dye penetrates deep into the fibre. Once woven, the colour is firmly embedded in the fabric’s structure. This ensures significantly greater colour brilliance, better rub fastness and, above all, excellent lightfastness. A coloured design woven from yarns of different colours possesses a depth and quality that a printed design can never achieve.

We also place particular emphasis on preparation. When warping the loom – winding thousands of warp threads onto the warp beam – the utmost precision is required. Every single thread must be tensioned to exactly the same degree. Only then can we ensure a flawless fabric finish, free from streaks or tension irregularities. Our staff in the warping department have mastered this craft to perfection.

The finishing touch for the soul of the fabric

When the fabric comes off the loom, we call it ‘raw fabric’. It is often still a little stiff and has not yet revealed its true character. It only acquires its final character during our in-house finishing process. The fact that we carry out this critical step in-house rather than outsourcing it to contract finishers is exceptional for a weaving mill of our size and guarantees you reliable, consistent quality.

To get the best out of the fibre, we use innovative technologies and processes.

Thermal finishing

Every fabric undergoes this process at our facility. As yarns are subjected to enormous forces during weaving, there are often variations in tension within the fabric. We carefully steam-stretch every metre and draw it onto the stretching frame to its final width. During this process, the so-called weft curve is also corrected to ensure the fabric is perfectly straight.

Tumbling

To give certain fabrics an even softer, more fluid feel, we use tumbling. In this process, the fabric is mechanically treated and relaxed by agitation in a water tank.

Mechanical finishing

This is particularly essential for our velvets. In a series of precise steps, the pile is raised, brushed and sheared. This creates the characteristic, elegant texture and the unrivalled feel of our velour collections.

Functional finishing

On request, we can treat our fabrics with a light stain-resistant finish. This finish has been medically tested and ensures that the fabric remains skin-friendly and safe despite the enhanced protection.

Our quality seal

We are particularly proud that our Q2 quality seal has set new standards. These upholstery fabrics do not require any chemical treatments to be easy to care for. Their cleanability is based purely on the physical properties of the fibres and the special weave construction. For you, this means that the protection does not wash out; it lasts for the entire lifetime of the fabric.

Uncompromising quality assurance in our own laboratory

For our customers, sustained quality as well as process reliability is crucial. To ensure this, we subject every production batch to rigorous quality testing in our in-house laboratory. We work strictly in accordance with international standards (DIN, ISO, RAL).

Among other things, we test for:

1. Martindale abrasion test: A standard fabric is repeatedly rubbed against the test fabric under a defined pressure. A standard upholstery fabric should withstand approximately 10,000 to 15,000 cycles. Our results often exceed 50,000 cycles, guaranteeing exceptional durability.

2. Lightfastness (xenon test): Fading must not occur in a high-quality product. Your customers rightly expect an expensive fabric to retain its brilliance over time. As we consistently use only the highest-quality dyes and dyeing methods, our Q2 fabrics achieve excellent ratings of 5 to 6 on the blue scale. We also stock official outdoor fabrics in our range, which undergo even more rigorous testing to ensure they remain durable even under extreme conditions.

3. Pilling: Do small bobbles form as a result of friction? We test this in advance so that your customers don’t end up being annoyed later on.

4. Colourfastness: Does the fabric run onto light-coloured clothing? This is also tested.

Only once a textile has passed this series of tests is it allowed to leave our premises. This is how we guarantee the durability and safety of your products.

Responsibility in every metre

Sustainable fabrics are no longer a niche product, but a key market requirement. We embrace this responsibility with complete conviction. Our entire textile production process is designed to conserve resources and minimise emissions.

Our products are certified (e.g. OEKO-TEX Standard 100), which gives your buyers and customers peace of mind. We are constantly working to increase the proportion of recycled materials (post-consumer and pre-consumer) and renewable natural fibres. We have already implemented this standard across our velour fabrics: by switching the warp to recycled material, the recycled content here is typically between 25 and 30%, with absolutely no compromise on quality. A fabric produced by Rohleder is always a statement of environmentally friendly consumption.
